اختارت هيئة الأفلام السعودية فيلم «مسألة حياة أو موت» للمخرج أنس باطهف، لتمثيل المملكة رسمياً في فئة أفضل فيلم دولي ضمن الدورة الـ99 من جوائز الأوسكار، بعد ترشيحه من اللجنة المعنية باختيار الفيلم السعودي للمنافسة الدولية.
من البحر الأحمر إلى الأوسكار
يأتي الترشيح تتويجاً لمسار سينمائي قطعه الفيلم منذ عرضه العالمي الأول في مهرجان البحر الأحمر السينمائي الدولي بجدة في ديسمبر 2025، قبل وصوله إلى دور العرض السعودية في 25 يونيو الماضي.
وواصل الفيلم حضوره في مهرجان أفلام السعودية بدورته الـ12، حيث حصل على تنويه خاص من لجنة التحكيم، فيما حصدت سارة طيبة جائزة النخلة الذهبية لأفضل تمثيل عن أدائها في العمل.
رحلة المنافسة تبدأ
ويضع الترشيح السعودي «مسألة حياة أو موت» ضمن الأعمال التي تخوض مراحل المنافسة على أوسكار أفضل فيلم دولي، إذ يخضع الفيلم للتقييم والفرز من جانب أكاديمية فنون وعلوم الصور المتحركة، قبل الوصول إلى القائمة النهائية، على أن يعلن عن الفيلم الفائز خلال حفل توزيع جوائز الأوسكار في مارس 2027.
أول عرض رقمي
وفي خطوة تزامناً مع مواصلة الفيلم مشواره، يستقبل الجمهور «مسألة حياة أو موت» رقمياً عبر منصة شاهد، اعتباراً من 22 أكتوبر الجاري، ليكون ذلك أول إتاحة للعمل عبر المنصات الرقمية.
سارة طيبة ويعقوب الفرحان في البطولة
يجمع الفيلم في بطولته سارة طيبة، ويعقوب الفرحان، وحسام الحارثي، وأماني الجميل، وغادة عبود، ورهف إبراهيم، ونجلاء العبدالله، فيما كتبت سارة طيبة السيناريو، وتولى أنس باطهف الإخراج.
حكاية استثنائية في جدة
تدور الأحداث في جدة حول «حياة»، شابة تسيطر عليها قناعة بأن لعنة متوارثة ستنهي حياتها مع بلوغها الثلاثين، بينما يجسد يعقوب الفرحان شخصية «يوسف»، جراح قلب منعزل يواجه صراعاً مع ميول قاتمة.
ويجمع لقاء غير متوقع بين الشخصيتين، لتنشأ بينهما خطة غريبة تتحول تدريجياً إلى علاقة عاطفية، في عمل يمزج الكوميديا الرومانسية السوداء بالخيال، ويطرح موضوعات الخوف والعزلة والرغبة في التواصل الإنساني.
The Saudi Film Authority has chosen the film “A Matter of Life and Death,” directed by Anas Bahthef, to officially represent the Kingdom in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, following its nomination by the committee responsible for selecting the Saudi film for international competition.
From the Red Sea to the Oscars
The nomination comes as a culmination of the cinematic journey the film has taken since its world premiere at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah in December 2025, before reaching Saudi theaters on June 25.
The film continued to make its presence felt at the 12th Saudi Film Festival, where it received a special mention from the jury, while Sara Taiba won the Golden Palm award for Best Performance for her role in the film.
The Competition Journey Begins
The Saudi nomination “A Matter of Life and Death” places it among the works competing for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, as the film undergoes evaluation and selection by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, before reaching the final list, with the winning film to be announced during the Oscar ceremony in March 2027.
First Digital Release
In a step coinciding with the film’s ongoing journey, audiences will be able to watch “A Matter of Life and Death” digitally on the Shahid platform starting October 22, marking the first availability of the work on digital platforms.
Sara Taiba and Yaqoub Al Farhan in the Lead Roles
The film stars Sara Taiba, Yaqoub Al Farhan, Hussam Al Harithi, Amani Al Jamil, Ghada Aboud, Rahaf Ibrahim, and Najla Al Abdullah, with Sara Taiba writing the screenplay and Anas Bahthef directing.
An Exceptional Tale in Jeddah
The story unfolds in Jeddah, revolving around “Hayat,” a young woman who is consumed by the belief that a hereditary curse will end her life upon reaching thirty, while Yaqoub Al Farhan portrays “Yusuf,” a reclusive heart surgeon grappling with dark inclinations.
An unexpected encounter between the two characters leads to a strange plan that gradually evolves into a romantic relationship, in a work that blends dark romantic comedy with fantasy, addressing themes of fear, isolation, and the desire for human connection.
